Crispy Lumpia Shanghai
A popular Filipino appetizer, these spring rolls are filled with a savory mixture of ground meat and vegetables.
Ingredients
- 500g ground pork
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 carrots, finely grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 25 lumpia wrappers
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, onion, carrots, garlic, green onions, egg, and soy sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well.
- 2
Separate the lumpia wrappers. Place about 2 tablespoons of the filling on one end of a wrapper. Roll it up tightly, folding in the sides. Moisten the edge with water to seal.
- 3
Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
- 4
Fry the lumpia in batches for 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
- 5
Serve hot with sweet chili sauce.
Tips & Notes
To prevent the lumpia wrappers from drying out, cover them with a damp cloth while you are working. Don't overcrowd the pan when frying, as this will lower the oil temperature and result in greasy lumpia.
